피아니스트 _ 박종화

피아니스트 박종화는 5세에 일본 도쿄 음악대학 영재학교에서 미우라 카츠코, 이구치 아이코를 사사한 후 1992년 미국 보스턴 뉴잉글랜드 음악원에서 전설적인 피아니스트 러셀 셔먼 문하에서 학사와 석사 과정을 마쳤다. 1999년 드미트리 바슈키로프 교수를 따라 마드리드의 소피아 왕립 음악원에서 최고 연주자 과정을 마쳤으며, 2003년에는 독일로 건너가 엘리소 비르살라제 교수 문하에서 뮌헨 음대의 최고 연주자 과정을 마쳤다. 

그는 수학 과정에서 암스테르담 콘서트헤보, 뮌헨의 헤르큘레스 홀, 마드리드 국립 콘서트홀, 벨기에의 팔레 드 보 등 세계 유명 공연장을 무대로, 보스턴 심포니, 뉴햄프셔 심포니, 드레스덴 심포니, 상트페테르부르크 심포니, 벨기에 플레미쉬 국립 오케스트라, 북네덜란드 심포니 오케스트라 등과 협연하였다.

박종화의 탁월한 연주 능력은 세계적인 콩쿠르의 입상을 통해 확연히 드러나기 시작했다. 12세에 일본 마이니치 음악 콩쿠르 우승을 비롯하여, 2003년 부조니 국제 피아노 콩쿠르 입상 및 부조니 상을 수상하였다. 1995년 퀸 엘리자베스 국제 피아노 콩쿠르 최연소 입상(5위) 및 최우수 연주자 상을 받았으며, 더불어 표트르 안드리센이 수여하는 비평가상도 받으며 주목받았다. 또한, 1998년 텔아비브에서 개최되는 루빈슈타인 콩쿠르 특별상, 스페인 산타데르 국제 피아노 콩쿠르에서 특별상과 청중상을 받았으며, 이 밖에도 유수 콩쿠르에 입상하며 새로운 스타 탄생을 알렸다.

그는 2007년 서울대학교 교수로 부임하여 후학 양성에 힘쓰는 한편, 2012년 첫 국내 앨범 ‘히어로즈’를 소니 클래식스에서 발매하며 전국 투어와 함께 본격적인 활동을 시작하였다. 2015년에는 ‘엄마야 누나야’ 등 친숙한 동요를 피아노곡으로 재해석한 두 번째 음반 ‘누나야’를 유니버설에서 발매하며 전국 투어 연주를 성황리에 마쳤다. 또한, 음악 예술의 사회 확산에도 노력하고 있는 그는 도시 재생 예술 프로젝트 ‘달려라 피아노’와 ‘지하철 안의 바흐(BACH in the Subways)’의 예술감독으로 참여하였고, KBS 1TV '다큐 공감‘에 방영된 ‘뮤직 인 모션(Music in Motion)’ 프로젝트에도 참여하였다. 

2016년에는 세계 3대 실내악 오케스트라 중 하나인 취리히 체임버 오케스트라와 협연, 대전시립교향악단, 성남시립교향악단, 경기필하모닉, 2018년 KBS교향악단과 함께 평창동계올림픽 성공기원음악회, 부산시립교향악단, 목포시립교향안단, 평택시립교향악단, 울산시립교향악단 협연 등 현재까지 국내외 유수 오케스트라와 왕성하게 활동하고 있다.

Jonghwa Park is a concert pianist and professor. Born in Korea, he began playing piano at age four. In his youth, he studied at the Preparatory School of Tokyo Music College in Japan and the Preparatory School of New England Conservatory in the U.S. In 1992, Park followed the great artistry of legendary pianist Russell Sherman at the New England Conservatory in Boston, followed Bashkirov to Spain, where he obtained the prestigious Artist Diploma in Escuela de Musica Reina Sofia, Madrid, and enrolled in the distinguished Meister Podium program at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Munich in 2003.

Park has appeared in renowned concert halls including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Herculas saal in Munich, and the Palais de Beaux in Belgium. His prolific international career as a pianist allowed him to debut with some of the world’s highly acclaimed orchestras including the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Symphony, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Park has achieved many accolades throughout his career. He won several first prizes at national competitions in Korea, Japan, and the U.S. including winning the Mainichi Shinbun Music Competition in Japan at age 12. 

Internationally, Park is a recipient of a number of awards including a Critic’s Prize in the Queen Elizabeth International Piano Competition in 1995, second prize and the public prize from the Santander International Piano Competition in 1998, and a special prize from the Rubinstein International Competition. Park is also a laureate of the Ferrucio Busoni International Piano Competition.

As a socially conscious and conscientious artist, he firmly believes that music is to be shared beyond concertgoers. He is committed to realizing this belief through projects such as ‘Run Piano’ in the capacity of an artistic director delivering live music to disadvantaged communities and individuals. 

In 2012, his debut recording of Rachmaninoff and Mussorgsky with Sony Classical. His second album ‘NUNAYA’, Korean Children’s Songs arranged as piano pieces were released with Universal Music in 2015 and also completed a widely praised NUNAYA Korea tour that launched at LG Arts Center in Seoul.
