Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra
Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra is a Korean orchestra base in Daejeon, one of the six metropolitan city in the
country. Since its foundation in 1984, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra has been raised as one of the preeminent
orchestra in South Korea. It has been renowned for its foundational works and adventurous explorations, impressive
ensembles and for passions to capture the hearts of audiences.
The orchestra’s appearances both at home and abroad include participations in ‘Korean International Music Festival’ in 2006 which it got praised as the “Outstanding Performing Orchestra”, ‘Asia Orchestra Week’ in 2005 and 2015 in Japan, tours in the States(Tour in the USA, 2004) and Europe(Europe Tour, 2012) ; appearing in Vienna(Golden Hall of Musikverein), Praha(Smetana Hall of Municipal House), Budapest(Italian Institute of Culture), Munich(Hercules Hall of Munich Palace). In December 2014, the orchestra celebrated its 30th Anniversary, having the pleasure of playing the Complete Beethoven's Symphony. This year, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra participated in festivals in France and Germany; Saint-Malo Music Festival(April, 2017), Festival der Musikfestspiele Saar(May, 2017), and also a concert in Hessischer Rundfunk Sendesaal in Franfurt.
Under the directorship of James Judd, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Resident Conductor Myung-uh Ryu and Principal Guest Conductor Matthias Bamert, the orchestra provides various programs through a year. 'Masters Series' is a representative subscription concert program, delving for the greatest composers of the classical-era and romantic-era and 'Discovery Series' is a program which is designed to enhance the symphonic music experiences with conductor’s commentaries. ‘Chamber Series’ program presents a different side of the classical repertoire with intimate performances that includes personal insights of musicians. To support the young musicians, the orchestra offers young musicians a chance to collaborate with the orchestra on ‘Young Artists Concert’ and connect with students through 'School Classic' program.
The orchestra's involvement extends beyond symphony concerts in a concert hall. Believing that the orchestra can send positive messages to the world by using the musical skills, the orchestra spreads the joy of classical music to the public in residential neighborhoods by 'Happy Classic Series' and 'Community Outreach Program' which visits organizations such as social facilities, orphanages, senior centers, hospitals and schools.
