Flutist _ Sung-hyun Cho
Currently the youngest professor at the Yonsei University in Seoul, Sung-hyun Cho served as principal flutist of the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne (general music director: François-Xavier Roth), flutist Sung-hyun Cho proved himself early on as a rising star by winning the British Flute Society Young Artist Competition, International Flute Competition “Friedrich Kuhlau,” Beijing International Music Competition and the 2012 International Flute Competition "Severino Gazzelloni" in Italy. He was subsequently invited to perform recitals at Falaut, Emilia Romagna, Cava de’ Tirreni, Agimus and China International Flute Festivals as well as Milano’s Incontri Musicali series. Having drawn attention once again by winning Second Prize at the 2015 Prague Spring International Competition, he has been featured at Schwetzingen Festival in Germany, Cremona Musica festival in Italy among many others.
Cho began his career as an orchestra musician in 2013, when he served as a member of the Berlin Philharmonic as part of its internship program, the Karajan Academy. For a year and half, he was mentored by Emmanuel Pahud, Andreas Blau and Michael Hasel and worked under such conductors as Simon Rattle, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Chailly, Andris Nelsons, Tugan Sokhiev and Semyon Bychkov.
Cho studied with Eui Kyung Park, Michel Debost and Andrea Lieberknecht at Korea National University of Arts Preparatory Division, Oberlin Conservatory in the USA, Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media and University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in Germany. He is currently a founding member of Veits Quintet, which was awarded Second prize at the Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition in Copenhagen in 2015. the quintet's first recording was released in 2016 on the ARS label. and he is an artist of Sankyo Flute in Japan and artistic director of Flute Art Center, the only professional off-line platform for flutists in Korea.
In 20/21, he can be seen at Pyeongchang Winter & Summer Festival, SAC Classic Festival, Kumho Art Hall’s Beautiful Thursday series, Seoul International Music Festival, Seoul Spring Festival and many others.
